Thinking About a Bespoke Ring?

Here’s Everything You Should Know Before You Start

Designing a bespoke ring is one of the most exciting journeys you can take - a chance to capture a feeling, a story, and a piece of yourself in a jewel made to last a lifetime.

Often, it begins with just the smallest spark: a colour you love, a gemstone you can't stop thinking about, or a feeling you want to hold onto.
From that first seed of inspiration - the aril - something beautiful can grow.

Whether you're dreaming of an engagement ring, a special anniversary jewel, or a one-of-a-kind piece to mark a milestone, here are a few things to consider before you begin.

1. Choose the Right Expert

The right jeweller will make the whole experience feel effortless. Look for a trained designer, gemmologist, or jeweller — someone who not only understands the technical side of creating fine jewellery, but also takes the time to really listen to what matters most to you. A good bespoke experience should feel like a collaboration, where your ideas are understood, refined, and brought to life with care and expertise.

At Aril Jewels, we work closely with every client to bring their dream to life using our years of experience and training in jewellery design, gemmology, and fine jewellery production. Between us, we have over twenty years of working in "the trade" — from designing in-house for high jewellery ateliers to managing complex bespoke commissions. We’re known for being exacting in the details, and nothing leaves our hands unless it meets the incredibly high standards we hold ourselves to. It’s this blend of creativity, precision, and passion for fine jewellery that makes us a trusted choice for those looking to create something truly exceptional.

2. Bring a Little Inspiration

You don't need to arrive with a full design in mind - part of the magic is discovering it together.
Bringing a little inspiration helps: a gemstone you adore, a colour palette, a flower, a style you're drawn to, or even just a feeling you want the piece to capture.

Think of it as your starting point — a few arils of inspiration (little seeds of an idea) we’ll help you nurture into a design that feels uniquely yours.

3. Define Your Investment

Understanding what you’re comfortable spending helps guide the design and ensures we create something extraordinary within your vision.

It’s not about compromising – it’s about making sure we’re choosing the best possible gemstones, materials, and design features that align beautifully with your goals. When we understand your expectations early on, we can make thoughtful recommendations and focus on what will bring the most meaning and impact to your finished piece.

4. Stay Open to Guidance

Part of our role is to help balance beauty with practicality. Sometimes that means suggesting small design adjustments for durability or recommending gemstone cuts or settings that better suit your lifestyle.
Every detail is carefully chosen to ensure your piece looks beautiful from day one and remains just as special for years to come.

5. Think About Your Lifestyle

Rings, in particular, are worn more than any other jewel – so they need to be designed with everyday life in mind.

If you’re very active or work with your hands, we’ll help you consider setting styles and gemstone choices that are especially durable. This ensures your ring is not only beautiful but truly wearable – something that will stand the test of time and be a joy to wear every day.

6. Allow a Little Time

Beautifully handmade jewellery isn't rushed - and that's what makes it so special.
From sourcing exceptional gemstones to designing and creating your piece, the process can take a little longer than choosing a piece that's already been made.
If you have a special date in mind, like a proposal or an anniversary, it's never too soon to begin the conversation. (And the earlier we start, the more possibilities we can explore together.) Once your final design and gemstones are confirmed, we need around five weeks to create your finished piece.
