Q&A on proposal planning with Emma Murray-Jones (pictured dressing a wedding table)

A proposal isn’t just about asking a question; it’s the moment that marks the start of your next chapter together. The ring might be the showstopper (at least in our eyes!), but what really makes a proposal unforgettable is the thought, the meaning, and the moment itself. Whether you’re imagining something intimate or something a little more elaborate, the most perfect proposals are the ones that feel personal.

For inspiration and tips on planning the perfect proposal, we turned to Emma Murray-Jones, a luxury wedding planner with over 10 years of experience curating meaningful celebrations. Known for her meticulous attention to detail and creative approach, Emma has worked at some of the world’s most stunning venues, ensuring every moment feels unforgettable. In this Q&A, she shares her expert advice on everything from choosing the perfect location to adding thoughtful touches that make your proposal uniquely yours.

Firstly, can you tell us a little about your background and what inspired you to become a wedding planner?

From early on in my career, I’ve been drawn to the magic of events — the planning, the creativity, and the process of turning ideas into something truly special. There’s something uniquely fulfilling about crafting experiences that bring people together, but weddings, in particular, have always held a special place in my heart. What inspires me most about wedding planning is the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in such a personal, once-in-a-lifetime moment.

What are the most important things to think about when planning a proposal?

The most important thing is to focus on your core intentions: popping the question and letting your true feelings shine through. A proposal can be as bold and vibrant or as intimate as you like — there’s no right or wrong — as long as it feels right for you.

How can someone create a proposal that feels deeply personal and unique?

I recommend incorporating elements that have meaning to you both, whether that’s proposing at your favourite restaurant, the place where you had your first date, or even in their favourite gallery if they love art. Stay true to what’s important to you as a couple, and everything will fall into place.

What are some creative proposal ideas couples can use for inspiration?

When thinking creatively, consider everything that holds meaning for you and your partner — favourite sports, films, songs, restaurants, or activities like pottery or baking — and explore how you could weave these into your proposal. These ideas will help you find inspiration while keeping it true to your relationship.

What should people consider when picking the perfect proposal location?

There are several things to think about when choosing a location:

  • If it's in a public setting, consider whether your partner would be comfortable with a public display.
  • If it's outdoors, have a backup plan in case the weather doesn't cooperate!
  • If you need help from staff at the venue (perhaps a waiter will present the ring under a cloche!), make sure to contact them in advance with clear instructions and talk everything through.

How can a couple plan an engagement moment that feels intimate even in a public setting?

For a public proposal, use the space to your advantage. If there’s a piano in the venue, you could arrange for a pianist to play a special piece or have a singer perform your favourite song. Just keep in mind that anything you want to set up in advance may depend on the venue’s rules.

What are some creative ways to include friends or family in a proposal without losing the personal touch?

Including friends or family can make the proposal even more special. How you involve them will depend on the type of proposal you’re planning, but keep in mind that the more people who know, the greater the chance of someone accidentally giving it away! They could help plan a surprise element, discreetly capture the moment on camera, or be ready to celebrate afterwards.

From all the proposals we’ve been a little part of, the most memorable are the ones that feel personal, full of meaning, and just right for the couple - whether it's on top of an extinct volcano or by the bins at home!
