A hidden world in the palm of your hand.
At first glance, the Armillary Sphere ring is simply a band. Then it opens: the outer band splits apart and the inner bands turn, unfurling into four interlocking gold rings in the palm of your hand. A small, private universe that only you know how to open.
The design is inspired by late 16th-century armillary sphere rings in the British Museum's horology archives, and forms part of our Elizabeth collection. Elizabeth I's court was fascinated by the armillary sphere, an ancient instrument for mapping the heavens. It became one of her most personal symbols, appearing again and again in her portraits as an emblem of wisdom, power and her dominion over the cosmos.
We've reimagined the original design to make it modern and comfortable to wear. When worn, no one else will ever know what it does. The outside can be left simple or fully personalised, set with diamonds, engraved with a pattern, or decorated in whatever way feels most like you. Inside, we can hand engrave a meaningful motto, names, symbols, or words. A hidden message known only to you and whoever you choose to show.
Equally suited to men and women, each ring is individually handmade to order in London and takes at least 25 hours to complete. Because of the complexity of the mechanism, and the highly personalised nature of these rings, we can only take on a limited number of commissions each year. Please note these rings cannot be resized once made. As with any ring with a moving mechanism, we'd recommend removing it for very physical activities.
Available to commission in 18ct yellow gold or platinum, from approximately £5,000.
Prices vary depending on your preferred metal, finger size, engraving, and if you would like decoration or diamonds on the outside.
